History
July 2004
Alexander Hart, son of founder member Maggie Hart, was born. Alexander has Down syndrome.
October 2004
Maggie Hart contacted Professor Sue Buckley for the first time, Director of the Down Syndrome Educational Trust in Portsmouth. The Trust has been established for 25 years and has a world wide reputation for leading the way and inspiring research around the educational issues of children and adults with Down syndrome. Maggie told Sue of her experiences and concerns, and Sue suggested Maggie visit the centre.
October 2004
Maggie applied to the Mayor's Charity Fund and was awarded £500 to contribute towards the visit to Portsmouth.
November 2004
Maggie visited Portsmouth and attended a two day course, for teachers, about including children with Down syndrome in mainstream schools. On the third day she spent valuable time with Professor Buckley and her colleague Gillian Bird, as a parent, to see what service they provided both for pre-school and school-aged children. After seeing the pre-school groups in action Maggie felt very strongly that similar groups were needed here in the North of England.
January 2005
An information meeting about the centre was held in Harewood House.
The original committee was formed and starting to raise money, find premises, contact parents and organise staff and volunteers, with the aim of offering a pre-school education service for children with Down syndrome by November 2005.
